Dr. Rosland Gellatly is “semi retired” from being a primary care physician to embark on a new journey as a life coach and hypnotherapist.

After nearly four decades of serving the Blenheim community as a GP, Dr Rosland (Ros) Gellatly is taking a step back from surgery and embarking on a new journey after realizing that the old path she was traveling on it had left her exhausted.

Gellatly said her new career would still see her helping people with their problems, but in a very different way using skills and not pills in the form of hypnosis and life coaching.

The transition came after attending a virtual conference late last year on mental health issues and burnout among doctors, nurses and other medical staff.

After the conference, Gellatly said she realized it was time to make changes on her own.

It was getting to the point where I went to work, came home, got myself something to eat, sat in front of the TV, went to sleep, went to work, and my waist just got tighter and tighter.

It wasn’t completely black, but it was getting more and more like that and I didn’t do some social things because I just didn’t have the energy anymore.

So it got to the point where I thought I can’t go on like this, I have to do something about it which is what got me started on this new journey, she said.

Gellatly said curiosity during this time led her to take up life coaching, and she finally knew she’d found her next move.

Gellatly said she felt exhausted after nearly 40 years working as a family doctor in Blenheim.

After I got into it, I actually thought wow, this is actually what I want to do, so I wanted to start developing this other aspect of my life, she said.

In addition to becoming a qualified life coach, Gellatly has also trained to become a certified hypnotherapist, something she had previously dabbled in, but has had to put aside due to her job as a family doctor until now.

Gellatly said that by using a combination of life coaching and hypnosis skills, she was able to treat patients with the same problems she saw in her surgery, but in a completely different way.

What I’ve discovered with this new direction is about skills, not pills. There are so many things that I have seen as a family doctor that I can now actually help in a completely different way; all people with anxiety, people with chronic pain, people with phobias, people with background trauma.

It’s great for addictions; smoking goes without saying, but you can use it with other addictions like food, alcohol and drugs as well, he said.

Gellatly said central to his work was the use of neurolinguistic programming (NLP), a psychological approach to changing someone’s thoughts and behaviors to help achieve desired outcomes.

Is NLP about how we organize the way we think? Because, of course, how we think and what we believe spills over into what we do and how we live.

Gellatly said NLP and hypnosis are great ways to unblock the brain and change people's behaviors.

Gellatly said his new approach with hypnotherapy wasn’t about having people relive past traumatic episodes as he didn’t want to re-traumatize them.

People who are anxious or depressed, giving their brain some quiet time when everything else is so hyperactive is a really great start because then you can start to unpack and unlock what’s going on underneath.

It’s not about counseling or therapy, it’s about using the way the brain works and what we believe about ourselves to guide our behavior, thoughts and feelings.

Once you realize that the cost to you personally far outweighs what it’s seemingly costing you, then you can start making that change, she said.
